The Allen-Bradley 1746-HSCE2 is a Multi-Channel High-Speed Counter. The Controller offers a set of two ±A, ±B, and ±Z input channels and it supports three operating modes that allow two, three, or four-channel operation. These provide a track for two quadratures, a differential line driver, or for incremental encoders. The input channels A and B are configurable to count single-ended pulse for up to 4 input devices. 




The module features a capacity to control adjustments when actively counting pulses. This allows greater reliability. The Z input channel handles the storing, holding, and resetting of the counter data. When using a low-frequency input signal, the 1746-HSCE2 may accept false pulses. To avoid high-frequency noise on low-frequency signals, the user should remove the noise with the 1746-HSCE2 input cable to lead the current away from noise sources. In case of short circuit or overloaded current, the 1746-HSCE2 has a protection that is thermal cut-out based. This serves as a limit that will turn off all channels within milliseconds when the thermal cut-out temperature is reached.





The 1746-HSCE2 is compatible with all SLC 500 CPU modules. The counter capability extends to 24 bits (±8,388,607) with operating class 1 or 4. The input voltage ranges from 4.2-30V DC and output current to 1 Ampere. Input frequency response reaches to 1 M Hz and 0.7-1.6 ms back-plane response time. It is a self-determined rate of periods with no sequence mode and has 16 ranges to count/rate modes. The controller has a 1 preset input for Counters 1 and 2 only but no preset input for Counters 3 and 4. The controller’s isolation voltage is tested to withstand at 1000 V. The back-place current at 5 V is 250 mA and 0 mA at 24 V with a throughput of 700μs typical. It also has a maximum and minimum thermal dissipation of 1.25 W.
