Spherical concave lenses are used for light projection and beam expansion.With double-concave (DCV) lenses, both surfaces have a concave radius, giving them a shorter focal length than PCV lenses of equal radius of curvature. The most common materials used for spherical concave lenses are BK7 and UVFS.

The edges of plano-concave lenses are thicker than the center and flat on one side. Plano-concave lenses are used to expand beams or increase the focal length in optical systems, so they can be used in beam expanders and projection systems.


A plano-concave lens is a diverging lens. A plano-concave lens bends parallel input rays to diverge from each other on the output side of the lens, thus having a negative focal length.
