Potted Podocarpus Bonsai Tree

Podocarpus species are evergreen Woody Plants. They are generally trees, but may also be shrubs, they are mostly potted as bonsai. Species are cultivated as ornamental plants for parks and large gardens

Each tree species has specific requirements for its cultivation, training, and care.

The Podocarpus is a very dense, upright, slow growing evergreen woody plant that originally came from China and Japan. It has long slender dark green leathery leaves. A Podocarpus grows straight up with very little side branching unless it is actively pruned. This plant is relatively simple to care for and adapts well to various conditions. It is easily trained to be a bonsai or a topiary plants. When planted outside in the ground a Podocarpus grows quite large, but when used indoors or on the porch as a potted plant, it remains a small tree or shrub.

Because of its moderate growth rate it won't work as a hedge-in-a-hurry.

But given enough time these shrubs become thick, luxurious, full to the ground - and large enough to work as hedge bushes, privacy screens, or plants to camouflage unsightly things around the house.

Bonsai come in various styles. Below are some of the most commonly encountered ones:

1. Formal and Informal Straight

The trunk in a formal straight bonsai is straight, and the top of the tree is in line with the body and the base. In case of an informal straight bonsai, the trunk slants slightly, but the top of the tree still ends up directly above the center of the base.

2. slant

The entire tree is slanted to one side.

3. Cascade

The bonsai pinnacle ends up at the same height or lower than the pot, like a tree at the edge of a cliff.

4. Forest and Multi-Trunk

In a forest style bonsai, multiple trees are grown in the same pot, carefully fashioned to mimic a forest.

5. Rock

The tree grows on a rock with its roots anchored in the rock's cracks or in the soil below.
