Overview
Overhead cables are used in distribution and transmission lines to deliver electricity across urban, industrial, and rural networks. Depending on application, constructions include bare conductors for open‑air spans, covered/insulated overhead conductors to mitigate faults in vegetation corridors, and aerial bundled cables (ABC) for dense urban or complex right‑of‑way environments. Designs focus on high tensile strength, weathering resistance (UV, salt‑fog, ice/wind load), and reliable electrical performance with minimal line losses.
Typical voltage ranges: LV to MV distribution (0.6/1 kV, 6/10 kV, 12/20 kV), and up to HV for bare conductors
Conductors: Aluminum (AAC/AAAC), aluminum‑steel reinforced (ACSR/ACSS), aluminum alloy
Insulation/Covering: XLPE/PE for covered conductors and ABC; UV‑stabilized compounds
Neutral/messenger (ABC): Aluminum alloy neutral or steel messenger
Accessories: Suspension/tension fittings, spacers, clamps, insulators, arrester interfaces
Applications: Urban feeders, rural electrification, industrial parks, coastal and alpine routes, vegetation‑rich corridors
Standards: IEC 61089 (bare conductors), IEC 60888/IEC 62219 (covered), IEC 60502‑1 (ABC), GB/T equivalents, utility specs
Key Features
High tensile strength and sag control for long spans and heavy ice/wind loads
Excellent weatherability: UV resistance, corrosion resistance (salt‑fog), and low‑temperature performance
Options for covered/insulated designs to reduce fault rates and improve public safety
ABC options improve reliability in dense or vegetation‑prone areas and simplify installation
Low resistance and optimized stranding to reduce losses and enhance line efficiency
Layered from inside to outside
