The purpose of coatings has been stated to include improvement of the dispersion of TiO2 nanomaterials within the cosmetic formulation, inhibiting or controlling photoactivity, and improving compatibility with other ingredients in sunscreen formulations. The coatings applied to nanoparticle surface are also stated to be not UV absorbers themselves.
